Dog: Angel
Location: Richmond, VA
Program: 3-Week Behavioral Board & Train
Trainer: Ryan
Main Focus: Underconfidence, anxiety, public exposure, confidence, and comfort around new people
Outcome: Ongoing progress with confidence, public outings, and comfort around unfamiliar people
The Challenge
Angel entered training with significant underconfidence and anxiety. For a dog that feels uncertain or overwhelmed, everyday experiences such as going to a park, being around unfamiliar people, or navigating public environments can become more difficult.
At the beginning of training, Angel struggled with:
- Underconfidence
- Anxiety
- Comfort in unfamiliar environments
- Confidence around new people
- Navigating public settings
- Feeling secure during new experiences
- Building greater comfort outside familiar surroundings
Her training needed to address more than basic obedience. The goal was also to help Angel develop greater confidence while working through situations that previously made her uncomfortable.
The Training Approach
Angel is working with Trainer Ryan through a structured 3-Week Behavioral Board & Train. Her training includes opportunities to experience public environments and unfamiliar people while building confidence at a manageable pace.
Training has focused on:
- Building greater confidence
- Working through anxiety
- Getting comfortable in public environments
- Experiencing new places
- Meeting unfamiliar people
- Building trust during new situations
- Helping Angel stay engaged during outings
- Creating positive experiences outside familiar environments
- Developing more comfortable responses to everyday activity
A recent park outing gave Angel another opportunity to practice being out in public while working alongside Trainer Ryan.
The Results
Angel is currently halfway through her three-week program, so her training is still in progress.Even at this stage, the team has reported noticeable changes in how she handles public environments and unfamiliar people.
What has improved so far:
- Angel is getting out in public
- She is meeting new people
- Her confidence is beginning to grow
- She appears more comfortable during outings
- She has shown relaxed, positive body language, including a wagging tail
- She is gaining more experience navigating unfamiliar environments
- Her training is helping reveal a more confident side of her personality
The biggest change so far is Angel’s willingness to participate in experiences that previously may have been difficult because of anxiety and underconfidence. Her remaining training time will provide additional opportunities to continue building on this progress.
Trainer Insight
For dogs dealing with anxiety and low confidence, meaningful progress may look different from traditional obedience milestones. Being willing to enter a public space, meet a new person, remain engaged with the handler, or show more relaxed body language can all be important signs that a dog is becoming more comfortable.
The goal is not to force a nervous dog through difficult situations. Structured exposure, clear guidance, and repeated successful experiences can help the dog build confidence while learning that unfamiliar environments are manageable.
Angel’s progress at the halfway point shows why behavioral training should consider emotional comfort alongside obedience and responsiveness.
